How I Met Your Mother, Why the laugh track ?

How I Met Your Mother is a TV sitcom created in 2005 by Craig Thomas and Carter Bays, both are ex-writers for the David Letterman Show.

Set in Manhattan, HIMYM follows the social and romantic lives of Ted Mosby (Josh Radnor) and his friends Marshall Eriksen (Jason Segel), Robin Scherbatsky (Cobie Smulders), Lily Aldrin (Alyson Hannigan) and Barney ‘Suit Up !’ Stinson (Neil Patrick Harris). As a framing device, the main character, Ted, using voiceover narration by Bob Saget, in the year 2030 recounts to his son and daughter the events that led to his meeting their mother.

How I Met Your Mother has canned laughter (laugh track), like The Big Bang Theory. Some say that it’s a mix between real audience laughing and additional laugh samples. Once an episode has been shot, a few people are invited to watch it (it’s called ‘attending for a TV show taping‘ of ‘get TV show tickets’), and their (eventual) laughs are being recorded. And after that, there’s some serious audio mixing ! Check the Wiki page for laugh track, you will see the infamous Charley Douglass’ Laff Box.
