Lane Kim is Rory’s best friend. Lane was raised by a strict Korean mother, Mrs. Kim, who was disapproving of her love for rock music and desire to be a drummer. Hep Alien is the name of Lane Kim’s band (it’s an anagram of one of the Gilmore Girls producer, Helen Pai). Originally it was formed with Dave Rygalski, Brian and Zack Van Gerbig. Later, actor Adam Brody left Gilmore Girls to join The O.C., and Dave is replaced by Gil (played by Sebastian Bach, former lead of metal band Skid Row).
Lucas Luke Danes is Stars Hollow’s local diner owner. He has lived in Stars Hollow his entire life, and his dad’s hardware store became his diner after his dad passed away. He has a younger sister, Liz Danes (played by singer Kathleen Wilhoite), a nephew, Jess Mariano, and a daughter, April Nardini. In season one, Luke and Lorelai’s relationship begins to grow from playful antagonism to true friendship, and it becomes clear that Luke has romantic feelings for Lorelai… Luke has an ongoing animosity towards Stars Hollow’s unofficial leader, Taylor Doose.
Paris Geller is originally Rory’s main rival at Chilton Academy. Paris and Rory’s rivalry continues unabated and periods of hostility arise, but after Paris and Rory bond at a Bangles concert in New York they slowly become close friends. Both Paris and Rory share a dream of studying at Harvard, but both attend Yale in season four. Paris Geller character was created in consolation for Liza Weil after a strong audition for the role of Rory which eventually went to Alexis Bledel.
