The Eli Stone Controversy: Autism and mercury
The premiere episode of Elie Stone attracted controversy due to its plot line, which depicts the hypothesis that autism is caused by mercury used in childhood vaccines. For many years some parents and advocates for autistic children have championed the theory that the thimerosal (removed from vaccines since 2001) was a primary cause of autism in young children.
Following more or less the recommendations of the American Academy of Pediatrics, ABC studios decided to present a warning notice and voice-over after the premiere episode (January 31, 2008), with a second card directing viewers to the autism web site of the CDC. In 2007 (the previous year), Eli Lilly & Company, which developed thimerosal, and the two major companies that produce childhood vaccines for the U.S., GlaxoSmithKline and Sanofi-Aventis, spent an combined $138 million for advertising on ABC…
The anti-vaccine movement supporters include celebrities such as Jenny McCarthy, Kristin Cavallari, or Robert F. Kennedy, Jr.
