Paris terror attacks kill 128 people, France is under a state of emergency

(Last update December 6, 2015)

Yesterday was Friday the 13th, a really black Friday for France, indeed. A series of terror attacks was launched in Paris, killing at least 129 people. 352 people were injured, 99 remain in a state of absolute emergency.

Seven near-simultaneous terrorist attacks took place in and near Paris, comprising six mass shootings (with AK-47 rifles) and three suicide bombings.

The explosions occurred near the Stade de France, a stadium in the suburb, where President François Hollande was attending a football match between France and Germany.

The shootings occured in the 10th and 11th arrondissements (the Charlie Hebdo offices were located in the 11th arr.) in rue Alibert, rue de la Fontaine au Roi, rue de Charonne, avenue de la République, and boulevard Beaumarchais.

• Bloodbath at Le Bataclan
Le Bataclan is a famous theatre and music venue in boulevard Voltaire, between quartier République and Bastille. Last night, a US rock band was on stage, when four masked attackers entered the music hall and opened fire. The massacre lasted 2h30 before special police forces launched the assault. 87 people were killed in this carnage.

President Hollande declared a state of emergency and three national days of mourning. President Obama said “…it’s an attack not just on the people of France, but this is an attack on all of humanity and the universal values that we share.”

Today ISIL, the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (aka ISIS, IS or Daesh), claims responsibility for the death of the ‘crusaders’, as a response for France’s strikes in Syria. These are the deadliest attacks in Europe since the 2004 Madrid bombings. The Belgian justice minister said that arrests have been made in Brussels today.

Update 18 November

Huge police assault this morning (110 police forces including soldiers and special forces, 5000 rounds fired), on a flat in Saint-Denis (Paris suburb), where a woman has blown herself up and a suspect was shot dead, it might be the alleged Belgian Islamist mastermind Abdelhamid Abaaoud.

Seven men and one woman were arrested. Five French officers from the RAID anti-terrorism special forces were slightly wounded, and a police dog named Diesel died in this dramatic and long operation (nearly 7 hours).

The assault involved heavy gunfire, grenades, explosives and sniper shots, and was so violent that the building’s ceiling collapsed.

•The names of the terrorists: Abdelhamid Abaaoud, Salah Abdeslam, Ibrahim Abdeslam, Omar Ismael Mostefai, Ahmad Almohammad (possible alias), Samy Amimour, Bilal Hadfi + 2 unidentified

• 414 police raids (!) have been conducted across France since the terror attacks of Friday 13th, leading to the arrest of 60 people.

Hundreds of Belgians have held a candlelight vigil gathering in Molenbeek, the neighborhood where two of the terrorists grew up and where their family still lives.

Update 20 November – One week after the attacks

• The number of people killed in last week’s terror attacks in Paris has now risen to 130.

• Al-Mourabitoun, an Al-Qaida linked group based in northern Mali, claims responsibility for the attack.

Update 24 November

Another terror attack today in Tunis, after the Bardo Museum attacks in March. At least 12 people have been killed in an explosion of a bus carrying presidential guards in Tunisia’s capital.

In France and Belgium, two suspected terrorists remain on the run: Salah Abdeslam and Mohamed Abrini.

• Paris (France), Brussels (Belgium), Bamako (Mali) and Tunis (Tunisia) are now in lockdown, under a state of emergency.

Today, French President François Hollande met US President Barack Obama in Washington where they re-iterated their commitment to eradicating ISIL / Daesh.

• Abdelhamid Abaaoud had planned to carry out another suicide bombing attack in La Défense, Paris business district.

Update 6 December

On December 2, terrorist couple Syed Rizwan Farook and Tashfeen Malik shot and killed 14 people in San Bernardino, California. It was the deadliest terror attack since the 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School shootings in Newtown, Connecticut.

The woman, Tashfeen Malik, declared allegiance to the Islamic State on Facebook. Tonight (6 Dec.), President Obama will deliver an Oval Office adress to the nation.

• Last night (5 Dec.), a man stabbed three people at London’s Leytonstone underground station, while yelling “This is for Syria”. The Metropolitan Police Counter Terrorism Command is treating the attack as a ‘terrorist incident’.
